Counseling Philosophy

My purpose as a BIPOC counselor is to be an ally and advocate for underserved communities.I strive to do my best to close the gap of disparities by implementing funds of knowledge, cultural components, mental health awareness, and social emotional learning.

My goal as a counselor is to positively impact every student I have the opportunity to interact with. I would begin this process by setting the tone at the beginning of the school year, starting off with engaging icebreakers and daily check-ins which will foster genuine interpersonal relationships. Secondly, I would implement social emotional learning tactics directly from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learnings Framework. The framework is meant to “foster knowledge, skills, and attitudes across five areas of social and emotional competence” (CASEL 5), these being self awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills. This can be accomplished by establishing a safe environment that allows all students to flourish and consistently encouraging them to practice positive inner dialogue. For example, by introducing a technique such as shadow work journaling students will have a place to document and process the negative or upsetting parts of their personality without judgment. This will motivate them to examine what they struggle with internally, develop their healing process, and improve their relationship with themselves.

Moreover, by being a mentor that fosters a healthy and safe environment this will allow all students to develop a sense of belonging. Therefore, supported by the relentless encouragement placed on my students, they will be able to thrive and be provided with the necessary tools to become global change makers.

  • This specific lesson plan allows for 6th-8th grade students to understand the power of social change, promotes equality, and overall aids in recognizing historical struggles. By learning about this pivotal movement, children will have the opportunity to truly grasp the hardships endured by marginalized communities. As educators we must teach hard history to our students in order to foster critical thinking and provide them with the tools they need in order to challenge similar issues in their own time.
